Please apply "Frontline" or "Revolution" or any anti ticks,fleas and mites lotion on a regularly basis.Do not wait until you want to put your dogs with us and then apply those stuff. It won't be effective.

A few tips for newbie at Dog Sitter Singapore Pet Hotel

1)Do not begin boarding your dogs with the dog sitter during the night. They may find lesser time to adjust to the place before bedtime. Trying boarding them in the early afternoon.

2) Do not bring too many doggies' stuff like toys,those huge beds etc. Reasons are other dogs may pee on them and besides your dogs would hardly play with those toys.

3) Supply dog sitters with pee pads if your dogs are pee pad-trained.

4) Make sure the collars,harness and leashes are strong and in good order because your dogs may run away should any of those stuff failed during walks.

5)Do not bargain over the boarding fees especially if that particular dog sitter's services are in great demand. If you think his fees is too high and you can't afford to pay,check your pet into a pet hotel or some 3rd graded partime dog sitters.

6) Be nice to your dog sitter and do not give too many instructions. Please write down your instruction if you consider them improtant.

A few dog owners asked for discount when boarding their pet dogs with us. It's perfectly alright to ask for discount but over here we are not selling a commodity. We are devoting our time,care and love to the pets,24 hours a day,7 days a week (24/7)and this sort of thing cannot be measured in monetary terms. If one feels the fees is too high, it is best they put their dogs with friends,relatives or a cheap kennel.

We dogsitters sometimes are awake the whole night because some newly boarded dogs cannot adjust themselves here especially the first night. We understand their emotional state and even cuddled and put them in our bed to sleep with us. These dogs need alot of love and reassurances. We strive to give our best and that's why many of our boarders want to come back here over and over again.

Many dog owners have told us that each time when the vehicles turn the corner to our place,their pets would be wagging their tails,knowing they would be showered with love at our house. Some don't even want to go home when their owners came to fetch them after their vacation. One owner even told us she was very jealous because her Yorkie preferred us to her. She later corrected herself and said she was very happy because she knew her pet would be in extremely good hands when she and her family are away.

We have to admit that not all of our customers bargain nor ask for discount.

Mini Schnauzers are great pets. Above is Bubble on your left and Whisky,a 13 year old neutered male. Bubble is a 3 year old spayed bitch. Both have good temperement and good toilet habits. They are newbies at Dog Sitter Singapore and have provened to be wonderful pets. We simply love them like any other of our "hotel guests".

Except for the Chihuahua,the Silky and 3 Maltese belong to Arthur and his wife. The doggies are staying here for a week and this is their firt time. All of them adapted very well despite of us being "strangers" to them.
Quite amazing to see a Singaporean family having 4 lovely pet dogs. Usually,it is seldom more than 2 in a family.
Another thing to note is that all the 4 doggies sleep on the bed with us. Yumi and I are now thinking of buying a super king size bed... hahaha

Ryan Chua, a friend of ours have asked DogSitter Singapore to assist him in rehoming his 2 JR recently.It was not so much of wanting to give up his dogs for adoption but rather the circumstances that led Ryan to resort to such action.
Ryan and his wife have now moved into a small apartment and also because of their work schedule could not afford the time they used to put aside for their pet dogs.
So,with very little choice left and 2 broken hearts,they decided to put them up for adoption.

Some info on the 2 JR:
Their names are Mocha (left) and Milo and they are 6 years old,neutered Jack Russell. They are extremely friendly and nice to people and other dogs. They hardly bark. They are healthy and free from any sickness.

Recently I received a phone call from an American lady asking me whether I mind if she bring her kids to DogSitter Singapore to play with our doggie guests.
It would be nice to have the kids over but frankly we, at DogSitter Singapore would be very busy attending to the doggies and would not have the time to monitor the kids. It would also be our responsibility to see the kids would not get hurt by the dogs.

I was asked by Agnes,P&P's "Mom" to visit her home twice a day for 5 days to dog sit for the 2.5 month and 7 month old Poppi and Peppi respectively. My task was to feed and walk Peppi as well as administer medicine to little Poppi who was confined to the playpen.Poppi has still not finished her vaccination and that's the reason she could not board at Dog Sitter Singapore.
It was a pleasure caring for these two mini Schnauzer as they were incredibly cute and worth my time travelling over 3 hours a days to visit and care for them.

Recently,I have all sorts of requests from dog owners and members of the public.There was one who stays at a hotel here in Singapore who wanted me to visit her hotel room to look after her pet dog while she was at a seminar. Another couple wanted me to spend 3 hours a day,3x a week in their house while both of them are at work. A few people wanted me to walk their dogs for them while they are working in the offices.Of course,there is Yorkie Billy's owners who wanted me to stay at their luxurious condominium to "dog sit" Billy while there are away.
Could you believe this,a family wanted to bring their 2 lttle children to my place to play with my guest dogs? Sure I wouldn't mind as the dogs boarding at my place are small breed and are usually friendly with people.
What next huh? Maybe someday,someone might call me up and proposed a business plan,involving dogs. Hmmmm yes, I need a partner or financer to start a dog boarding venture.

Chewie according to his owners, is a Labrador crossed from Japan. He is the most timid dog I've ever cared for. He jumped at the slightest noise and it took him 5 days to get used to us and our home.He couldn't sleep much and must sleep in our bedroom with us. He trembles at the sign of oncoming rain because he is afraid of lightning and thunder.
He is toilet trained but missed a few times on the floor of our house. But overall, Chewie is a wonderful pet who needs alot of TLC without which he couldn't have survived this well.

Yorkshire Terrier Billy Boy needs Dogsitter Singapore services yet once more. Yes,at his home again cos mom and dad are going overseas again.
I must say Billy has grown to be a matured young "man". We here at DogSitter Singapore have been caring for Billy Boy since he was 6 months old. He is now 16 months old. He has been neutered,lisenced and microchipped.

Rules to be observed when boarding your dog at Dogsitter Singapore

All dogs must be licensed according to AVA regulation.
The fine is now S$5,000 if a dog owner does not comply.
Owners need to show documents when boarding their pets.
Owners are encouraged to apply Frontline to their dogs at least 24 hours before boarding here.(for the prevention of fleas and ticks)
Unneutered male dogs above 7 months and below 7 years may not be allowed to board.

The above pictures show the young couple Shanice and jason who are keen on adopting Benji and the last 2 pics was taken at Guat's place as well as the videos.
The owner indicated she would prefer Guat,the school teacher to be Benji's new owner.
Last weekend was quite hectic for me as I had to interview and entertain potentials owners who were interested in rehoming Benji.Even till this very day,there were people calling to enquire about Benji.
I was offered money by people to let them rehome Benji but I did not think they were qualified enough. My main concern here was to get a better home for Benji and I decided to recommend Guat which in my opinion was the best candidate to be Benji's new "Mommy".
I will be visiting Benji again with her "mommy" to ensure the smooth transfer of Benji to his new home.
Good luck Benji and hope you will find your new "Mommy" and new home a suitable one.

Since our ads was published in the dogs' forum,there was a overwhelming interest and response from dog lovers who wanted to rehome Benji.
If you cannot afford to spend quality time with Benji eg. couples who are both working or travelling a lot or would lock Benji in the house for long period of time due to some other committment etc...please do not try to adopt Benji.
At the moment,we have shortlisted at least 5 families who may be considered potential Benji's owners. The decision to let Benji rehome with which family would finally come from Benji's owner.

At DogSitter singapore we provide all kinds of services for our doggie friends. We have helped and traced a lost dog's owner and also try to help Benji,the Silky to be rehomed.
All the above are done for free! We got rewarded for tracing Mocha's owner,Ryan Chua.It was a good feeling to see Mocha being reunited with his owner after 4 days of being missing from home. BTW Mocha is a Jack Russell and sorry I don't have his picture right now otherwise I would post it here.

I have woken up as early as 5 am to check in pets and checked them out as late as 12.30 am and at no extra charges. Where in the world do pet hotels operate at this unearthly hour,you tell me?....hmmm only at Dog Sitter Singapore,we are opened 24/7 (24 hrs a day and 7 days a week)

Why was I at Billy's Place?

I spent 2 weeks at Billy's house when his owners were away. Frankly, I would prefer Billy to board at my place like all other pet dogs. However,his owners prefer Billy not to be in the company of other pets because he might get hurt because of his size.
Usually, I would'nt want to spend my time in another person's house but for Billy,I will always try to oblige.
We have look after Billy since he was 6 months old and he is one of the cutest pets we have ever come across.We have seen him grew up from a puppy into what he is now.
No,no,I do not get paid extra for looking after Billy in his house. But the next time I should ask for inconveinence allowance hahaha.....what do you think?

Thea and Furun bade farewell to us last Friday after 32 days between the two of them at Dog Sitter Singapore.
But one of us is still at Yorkie Billy's house and will be until Tuesday.
Tomorrow,Chihuahua Koma will board at Dog Sitter Singapore for the next seven days when Mom and Dad will travel overseas.
We are so grateful to all these doggies for keeping us occupied and also giving us some badly needed money for us poor dog sitters to live on during our retirement.
Thanks to their kind owners too for appreciating our services. We always look forward to seeing them again.

Furun a 4 yr old Mini daschund

Furun is here at Dogsitter Singapore for a week when her Japanese owners are back in Japan for a vacation.
Yumi,being a Japanese herself takes charge of Furun,creating and updating her blog in Japanese for the owners to see from Japan.
Furun is a lovely pet but very shy and does not like to mix around with Thea the Beagle who happens to be here too.
Maybe,who knows the two of them may get along well and then start to miss each other when they got home.

Got our Yorkshire Billy client back at Dog Sitter Singapore

I am now back at the Billy's place and his owners are in presently in Europe for the next 2 weeks. It is a beautiful apartment with central airconditioning,swimming pool,suana,gym etc. We are at liberty to use any of the facility. My wife and I had been here before and we love it.

This time around,we had 2 other dogs at our place and so my wife and I take turn to come to this apartment to take care of Billy. We love Billy and that's the reason we compromised with Billy's owners.

Frankly,Billy would be much happier being at our place because he loves to play with the other doggies. Here at his place,he may have the familiar surroundings, 24/7 airconditioning and what not,he is a lonely pet. But then I would just do whatever the owners want me to do. After all,we also have the owners to please besides the pets.

We heard the dog sitter who was supposed to replace us did not do a good job. Billy was neglected and not well cared for unlike when he was with us.

We were kind of surprised when Billy's "daddy" called us last week and was willing to let Billy board at our place. I told him my wife and I could take turn to go up to his place to dog sit Billy. He was very happy with the arrangement.Hence,now I am at Billy's place.

Luke telling the three of us,the story of his first pet,a mongrel by the name of Brownie. That was when Luke a small boy,50 years ago.
Brownie was not as lucky as we guys,according to Luke. He was fed with leftover food which Luke's family would have considered as unfit for human consumption.
Brownie wasn't actually a pet in the real sense of the word.He was a guard dog because in those old days,there were petty thieves who would broke into the house when Luke and family were asleep. It was Brownie's job to bark or even attack the would be thieves......
We thoroughly enjoyed the story and thanked Luke for opening our eyes and ears to things that we have never seen or heard before. We are also so grateful to our "Moms" and "Dads" for being so kind to us by showering us with all the yummy food,snacks and care which Brownie never had.

Libby the Wheaton Terrier.

Libby needs a lot of care as far as her coat is concerned. Brushing her hair would take 1 hour and she would fall asleep and let Yumi do the work. Its a daily affair and Libby loves every moment of it.
My wife and I sleep about 5 to 6 hours a night.As long as one of the doggies are awake,perhaps to play or is restless, we are always there for them. This is one of the 'cons' of being a dog sitter. We could only have sufficient sleep when the doggies are all gone home. However,we are not complaining about their presence.

If you are lucky,you may even be given handsome tips from pet owners who appreciate the excellent care you have given to their pets.
I would usually be given gifts where the owners would buy from overseas where they vacationed. Gifts like chocolates,sweets and souvenirs were common. One paricular owner tipped me $150 cash and boxes of cherries and strawberries from the States. On another occassion,she bought and personally delivered us a whole grilled chicken and pig's trotter after discovering that we liked them. From Kuala Lumpur,she bought for us all sort of Malaysian cakes and sweets. As a result,between my wife and I,we put on 7kgs after consumming them.
This generous owner was and still is appreciative of our services because previous dog sitters and pet hotels did not provide the care for her precious pet as well as us. She deemed our dog sitting services to be The best.
One client of ours wanted us to dog sit her little Yorkie in her luxurious apartment.We obliged her a few times but as we had to care for other dogs too at our place,we had to turn her down.
In fact,we almost lost this client to other dog sitters who were prepared to stay at her place while she and her husband were away.
Fortunately,she prefers our services and her Yorkie is back at our place again. Of course,we like to stay at her luxurious apartment to care for her pet but sometimes,we would be short of manpower. I made a promise to her that if I can spare the man power,either me or my wife would be staying at her place when she is going away.

You can't get rich by becoming a dog sitter. Perhaps,at best,you can just make enough money to survive,enough to buy the 2 meals a day and pays for the electricity and water bills.You may have spare cash for the daily cup of coffee.

My wife and I became dog sitters because we love dogs. We are fascinated by this so called man's best friend.We were influenced by our neighbour's little toy poodle,Belle.

Belle is one of the most affectionate and intelligent dogs we ever come across. She weighs about 2.4 kg or slightly more than 5 lbs and is now 3 years old.She is cute,and extremely lovable too.She visits us almost daily.

One has to be passionate about dogs to be a good dog sitter. Everyone can be a dog sitter but how good a dog sitter are you, would depend on your love and passion for the furry friends.
Understanding,love,skills,experience and energy are some of the qualities a good dog sitter should possess.Patience is also an asset.

One of the pros of being a dog sitter is the exercise you would get from walking the dogs.We walk our dogs at least 3 times a day of 30 minutes each.Walking a dog 4 times a day is quite normal with us except when it's raining outside.

Cleaning the dogs after their walks and playing with them require a lot of energy too,especially for a 61 year old like me. Bathing them can be quite taxing but they let you burn off some unused calories.

Waking up early in the morning to walk and later to make breakfasts for them need some discipline on our part. Well if we do not wake up early enough,don't worry because the doggies would act as our alarm clocks.

Being with dogs give you the joy and the meaning of existence. Perhaps,I will go into that a bit later in my entries.

The pros of being a dog sitter.

To be a good dog sitter,one has to love dogs and understand them and not just to make money. The money part will come automatically or naturally as owners will be willing to pay once they know that you take good care of their furry "kids".

Another qualifying criteria to be a good dog sitter, is the ability to put aside the notion that doggies' pee and poos are dirty and smelly and you are too clean and hygienic to pick up their poo poo.

One also need to be caring and patient with these pets. You also need to be the assuring type so the new boarders would gain confidence and enjoy their stay with you.

Well,you also at times,need to be firm and strict with these doggies otherwise they would climb over your head and 'poo on it',so to speak. They are clever and would take advantage of your hospitality and bully you.
So if they are naughty eg. bark loudly and unnecessarily,you must tell them firmly that you dislike such anti-social behaviour.A firm and no nonsense tone of voice like 'No!' would do the trick.

Once a rapport and understanding is established between you and the dogie,it would be quite fun.

The owners are usually discerning and they could sort of 'feel' whether you are a capable dog sitter or not from the first time they meet you. Some even knows when they watch my videos I advertise on the Internet,whether I would be able to give love and affection to their pets,so they confessed to me later on.

The joy of being a dog sitter is to let the doggie 'guests' overcome the apprehension they have in the beginning of their stay with you,a stranger. Some of my 'guests' took a few minutes to overcome their anxiety and fear while there were a few who took a few hours. The faster they adapt to you the better but it also depends on the individual doggies.

In the last 1 year my wife and I had been bitten by a dog 6 times.This little dog was spoilt and overly pampered by its owner at home.
It would grabbed other dog's food after quickly finishing its own and when my wife tried to take it away from the bowl,it bit her hand.
It bit me twice and my wife four time in all.You will noticed I used "it" and also did not name the breed of this obnoxious dog because we do not want to offend its owner. To the owner it is a lovely sweet pet and it could do anything it felt like it. Here with us, it peed all over the house and in the dog's kingdom,this dog believed it is a leader of other dogs. It chased after cats and growled at other fellow boarders.
This dog is a exception in its behaviour.Other dogs that board here were usually quite well trained. Maybe a few would missed once in a while in disposing their "waste" but they would run and hide for the fear of being reprimanded.
So it is not all " a bed of roses" to be a dogsitter. Nevertheless, we love these doggies enough to tolerate some of their anti social habits. After all,many of them were nervous to stay in a stranger's home, at least for a few hours and to some for one to two days.

Dogs that pee in the house..what can you do?

Here are some of the questions and answers I have obtained from dog owners and the experts:

"Remember your dog wants to please you. Dogs are primarily social animals and want to win your favour and love.If she pee in the house,it could be due to many reasons known to her only.

Honor her by showing her when you are pleased when she goes potty where you want her to. And it would be good of you to show her how she can please you.
Never scold or reprimand your dog long after she had done the mistake because she may not know the reason for the scolding. If your pet is caught in the act of peeing in the house,a stern and firm "NO!" to her would be better than scolding or shouting at her.

Negative reinforcement just builds fear and resentment.

I think that if you dont have the time or inclination to teach a dog what you want from her you dont deserve her company or her love.

Question:

My 2 year old mini-schnauzer has urinated multiple times on new carpeting. She has 24 hr. access outside via a doggy door. She never has done this since trained as a puppy. I am sick and at my wits end. She get reprimanded each and every time. She just did it when I was even home. I need some advice on what to do. I have her sister as well who does NOT do this.

First of all, don't reprimand unless you find her in the act of peeing. I know this is hard but don't do it. Make sure you clean the areas really well. I use white vinegar. but I am sure she still can smell it. (04/04/2006)

Ups and Downs

I must confess that there are Ups and Downs of being a dog sitter.Although one could love these pet dogs,some dogs would drive you insane.Fortunately,there are more adorable and cute dogs who came and board with us than the intolerable ones.
The intolerable dogs are those mostly unsterilised dogs. There are sterilised dogs that gave trouble too but they are far and few in numbers.
Some of the troublesome dogs would pee all over the house,on furnitures,walls etc.They would also poo on the floor,away from the newspapers or pans provided.Reasons they do this are because:

(1) they could be disorientated as this is a new environment
(2) it is a sign of nervousness
(3) display of displeasure towards their owners for "abandoning"
(4) or just don't bother to look for the "toilets".
There are also other reasons which the human minds could not fathomed.

A few would bark unnecesarily all hours of the days and nights and give us nightmares.
What can we do to these pets? It's no point being upset over their obnoxious behaviour. We have to find solutions to the problems.

We accommodated friend's dogs

When friends of ours went on a holiday,we undertook to dog-sit for them. We did it for free. The first one to stay at our place was Belle and then there was a Whippet called Fu-chan. They stayed at our place for about a week each.

The owners were very grateful when they saw how well their pet dogs were cared for after their return from overseas. We gave these pets all the love we could accord,yes me and my wife.

We cleaned them,legs and butts included after their walks.We played with them as though they were our own.They were allowed to sleep on our bed with us.

A normal pet hotel in Singapore would not be suitable for these great pets.
You may ask why don't me and my wife have our own pet dog? In fact,we wanted to but then we travel quite a lot every year and where could we keep our pet? Obviously not in the pet hotels here where they caged up the dogs. Besides,the pet hotels were not in a inhabitable state as far as I am concerned. Some owners wouldn't mind leaving their pets in such places but not us.
Stories of how their pet dogs behaved psychologically and physically after their discharged from these pet hotels were told to us by many owners. Some of these dogs were sick.They lost some of their furs and others bled from their front paws. Nothing against these pet hotel owners but they were just conducting their businesses the way they know how.

Since we love dogs and due the above circumstances, we thought of the idea of "borrowing" or "fostering" these lovely pets and at the same time make a small living out of it.

As explained above,we did for free for our neighbour and friends and found that we loved to accommodate these lovely pet dogs and enjoy their presence. As such, we decided to start a little private "pet hotel" with a difference. At our place, we accommodate a maximum of 4 dogs at any one time and not more if we can help it.This is one way to give more attention,care and love to the pet dogs. The ratio is 1 of us to 2 doggies.

Articles by way of blogs and ads were posted on the Internet. The response was very good, I must say. At first our customers were expatriates but now more local pet owners are interested in our dog sitting services.

Since that day Belle visits our place regularly.

Since that day Belle has been visiting our place regularly.We are still receiving Belle as our guest to this day.
When Belle was 8 months old her, family left her in our care for a week when they went for a vacation. She was a little nervous that first night with us. Belle poo on the floor of our house. She was supposed to be toilet trained and would do her business on the newspaper laid in the bathroom for her.
She felt so guilty or maybe scared for doing the wrong thing that she hid herself under our bed. She would not come out from under the bed until we reassured her that everything would be alright. We called her in a loving manner and then she came to us.
Animals would usually respond positively if we are to use our tone of voice in the correct manner. Using harsh tone when saying "No!" will send a no-nonsense signal to the dogs and they would in most cases respond accordingly.
Belle the little toy poodle was no exception. She would respond according to the tone of our voice and more than that for she could undertsand many words we use on her.

I didn't find dogs to be great pets!

We had two dogs when I was a little kid way back in the early 1950s.They were mongrels,one by the name of Blackie and the other Brownie They were named after the colour of their coats.
The two dogs of ours were not exactly pets. They were guard dogs and their duties were to bark and warn the family if there were strangers approaching our properties.
These dogs were rough and tough sort of animals and they slept in the backyards.Their meals consisted mainly of our leftovers and they ate twice a day.
Bathing was only once in every six months or until they stank. They were good guard dogs and in those old days,we did not apply for dog licenses.
Most of the strayed dogs in my kampong or village were either put down by the authorities or ended up in large cooking pots.
Having dogs as pets back then was unheard of,let alone things like dog foods,pet or dog hotels,dog sitters or anything to do with pet dogs.
As a child, I had never seen a Poodle or a Yorkie or a Golden Retriever or even any pet dogs,at least around my neighbourhood.
Now after sixty years,I had just begun to appreciate and understand more about this man's best friend.
It all began when I had retired from my flying job with an airlines here and moved into my new house.
My immediate neighbours owned a toy poodle and one day Belle the little toy poodle of three months slipped through our gate and sheepishly entered our house.
This was the first time my wife and I had ever seen a toy poodle at such a close proximity. We were thrilled by the cuteness and gentleness of this little toy poodle.
I began to touch Belle's fur and it was fluffy and good to feel.Belle looked more like a little lamb than a dog to me.
